Frequently asked questions

What happens in our sessions?

In our first session I like to get an idea of the challenges you’re facing and learn a little bit more about you as a person or a couple. I will ask questions about your history and interests, about ways you’d like to work on your problem, and ask about previous experience of counselling.  A typical first goal for my counselling services would be to help you gain mastery over intense feelings, such as anger, sadness or anxiety. Learning how to calm yourself so that you can reflect on your situation objectively is an essential skill for therapy—and for life. Otherwise, you may not say what you need to, you won’t think about things that are challenging, or you may start avoiding therapy altogether. After that, we usually move on to the most common second goal: addressing the roots of your issues. Here, we take an in-depth look at the root causes of your troubles. We address them so that you can heal and grow.

How often should I come for sessions?

This depends on your presenting issues and the therapeutic approach that will most benefit you. I offer short-term, medium-term and open-ended sessions. Typically, the counselling process can take anywhere from 8-20 sessions before you notice change.
Regular reviews to see how things are going are helpful to identify progress and how many sessions you may need. Some clients come for a short course of sessions to work on a specific issue. Some like to work on issues then drop back to check-in sessions a few times a year.
You will typically know when you have reached a point where you feel you no longer need to come and we can discuss this together when it happens. I check in regularly with you to make sure you feel our work is on track with the goals you have established.
